Chapitre préliminaire
Welcome to Français interactif! In this introductory chapter you’ll begin exploring the French language and culture by following real students from the University of Texas who studied in France. You’ll meet them (and even some fun characters from Tex’s French Grammar), hear real French speakers, and see everyday French in action here on the site.
🎧 Your first French listening experience
Didn’t understand a word? Don’t worry!
This is your first contact with French. That’s totally normal! Listening comes first in language learning.
👉 Listen the following audio, referring the following table

Do you recognize any word?
👉 Listen again the very first audio, do now you have a better understanding?
French sounds all around us
French, like many other languages, is already part of our everyday life, we just don’t always recognize it.
For example, many people know the word bonjour and what it means, even if they have never studied French
To make sense of what we hear, we need an essential tool for learning a language: the alphabet.
Why the alphabet matters
If you ever travel to a French-speaking country, you might be asked to spell your name, your last name, or your place of birth.
To do this, you need to:
- recognize sounds,
- understand spelling patterns,
- and pronounce letters or words more confidently.
The alphabet helps connect sounds to written forms.
Ready? Let’s begin!
🎧 Listen to the following audio once.
Then, look at the image with the alphabet.
Finally, listen to the audio again and try to associate each sound with the corresponding letter.

Simple, right?
Did you notice any sounds that feel familiar?
Which ones sound new or different?
👉 Listen again and try to pronounce the letters out loud.
💡 Remember: You’re just beginning. Learning a language is like tuning your ear, at first it’s all sounds, then gradually meanings emerge. Listening without pressure is one of the most effective ways to start!
